A new President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has emerged after an election in Bayelsa State on Wednesday December 2, 2009. He is Alhaji Mohammed A. Abdullahi, a former commissioner of Information in Bauchi state.
The election was conducted at the Institute’s Conference & Annual General Meeting in Bayelsa State which was held between November 30 – December 3, 2009. The theme of the conference was “Building and Investing in Nigeria’s Reputation for Development.”
Other feature of the event was the election of 17 Council Members from different states in Nigeria.
The election of the new President was done through a collegiate of the elected Council members where Abdullahi of Bauchi Chapter was unanimously elected as President, while Dr. Dennis Ekemezie from Anambra State was voted as the Vice President.

The election was conducted by a 7-man Committee led by Mr. Ike Neliaku a Fellow of the Institute as the Chairman of Electoral Committee. The election which formed part of the Annual General Meeting of the institute witnessed the registration of 357 delegates who were duly cleared to vote.
The new Council is expected to serve a 2-year term.
The new President in a brief acceptance speech, thanked members for a peaceful and orderly conduct of election, especially the measures put in place by the Electoral Commission. He promised to re-invent and re-engineer the Public Relations practice for a better visibility and impact within Nigeria and overseas. He said this will only be possible when members act professionally and cooperate in the pursuit of what the Profession stands for. He called on all contestants (winners and losers) to sink whatever differences must have cropped up in the built to the election, and work towards elevating the Profession.
Alhaji Abdullahi observed that his highly selective and respectable Members of Council will always work as a family and team. Read his recent interview on NIPR from this link: My Vision for NIPR

This is to congratulate the new executive members of our professional body. Hoping they will live to the expectation

I congratulate the newly elected executive members of NIPR.I also use this medium to encourage them to bring in an effective change. Personally, am not so okay with the present image of the professional body, perhaps the body needs to be much more relevant than it used to be. I look forward to a period whereby NIPR will be consulted by the Federal Government for advisory services amongst other necessities.

I wish them the best of luck if only they do their best to restore the image of the profession

I am pleased to read the comments of our members and intending members on the recent AGM which produced a new set of members of council to run the affairs of the NIPR in Nigeria for the next 2 years.
The comments all point to a resounding fact--the need to make the NIPR better than what it is now.
This can only be possible where everyone contributes his/her quota towards the achievement of this singular goal.
It may be as simple as asking the right question when it matters most for those of us elected to be answerable to the members who elected us.

I believe this is achievable if we all are truly desirous of having an institute that is truly after professionalism and excellence.

We will keep you posted here.

    Thank you
